Fellowship for Diversity in Negotiation, Mediation, and Conflict Resolution
The goal of our Fellowship program is to strengthen the field of negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution by increasing the diversity of practitioners.
We recognize that the most marginalized groups in society — including people of color, women, trans and gender nonconforming/nonbinary people, people from poor and working class backgrounds, and people with children or other dependents — may face barriers to entry in the field. This Fellowship will center individuals from these communities by educating, encouraging and supporting them.
The Fellowship is a partnership between Habitus Incorporated and the Consensus Building Institute (CBI). For years, both Habitus and CBI have worked internally to create more diverse teams, inclusive policies and external programs that bring diverse voices to the field. While these initiatives have been valuable and productive, we also recognize that the field will not change more broadly without intentional and intensive efforts. In 2019, Habitus began offering a fellowship program targeting practitioners from under-represented communities. In 2020, Habitus entered a partnership with CBI and the fellowship program expanded. The 2021/2022 version of the program, now called the Fellowship for Diversity in Negotiation, Mediation & Conflict Resolution, has been further redesigned and expanded based on specific feedback from the 2019 and 2020 cohorts, with Habitus as the lead organization in partnership with CBI.
The Fellowship will welcome participants into an inclusive, equity-focused training community by offering:
One-year program of instruction in negotiation, mediation, difficult conversations, meeting design and facilitation (approx. 8-hour time burden per week)
$9,460.00 stipend paid to Fellows in monthly installments over the course of the Fellowship period
One-week in-person residency in Boston (location of Habitus and CBI offices) for intensive coaching session (expenses paid by the Fellowship program)*
Matching of Fellows with real clients for whom they will design and deliver a final project
Mentorship, observation, coaching and co-lead trainer opportunities
Special modules on teaching pedagogy, project management, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility & Social Justice (IDEAS) topics in the conflict resolution field.
