How are you applying what you learned in the fellowship to your current work?
I have used the things I learned in the fellowship on a daily basis really. Whether it’s interacting with friends and family, communicating with the Board of Directors and colleagues, interacting with potential partners, or developing new content for the programs we offer. Being in grad school while taking part in the fellowship took my education to a level that I could not have reached with grad school alone. The relevance and practical application of the things I learned in the fellowship are invaluable, and if I could join in for a second round of the fellowship I would do it in a heartbeat.
Any advice for others joining the conflict resolution field?
When it comes to joining the conflict resolution field, it’s important to keep in mind that understanding and dealing with conflict in a constructive way has far reaching application that is relevant wherever you find people. It is also cosmopolitan in how it challenges you to appreciate and incorporate all sorts of knowledge, whether it’s informal or academic, from other disciplines like psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, philosophy, all the arts, and so much more. So make sure you are looking at the different programs that are related to conflict resolution that are still active and even those that have ceased for various reasons. At the same time, remember that society at large has been slow to realize that conflict resolution is a thing and, whether we are talking about online or in real life, it is desperately needed in situations all over the US and throughout the world. Be prepared to explain that to people who have never heard the phrase or don’t see how it applies to them.
